52 Weeks-Episode 8: The Whole World Waits

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Another Friday, another song!

This one inspired by a movie about the Star of Bethlehem (it’ll blow your mind), the sound of Nora Jones new album (The Fall, get it at Starbucks), the general sound and productivity of Ryan Adams (we’re trying to keep up), and the simple fact that God came to earth.

It’s a rough draft, but, given that it’s really too late for this year, maybe it’ll be ready by Christmas 2010.

Hear planets speaking and hear stars agree
The world’s ready for its king
The virgin mother’s wait is near complete
Crowned with stars and dressed in peace

Here’s the song!

This song is part of a Songwriting Exercise we’re calling 52 Weeks. Check in next Friday for yet another song. Listen and let us know what you think, and be sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes .

52 Weeks-Episode 6: The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

There’s an ancient Greet lyric that I’ve been considering for awhile. I found it somewhere and loved the words, but consider the tune pretty uninspiring. Not only that, but our modern musical sensibilities require a chorus. So here you are: some old words with a new melody and a new chorus…perfectly timed, given the fact that we’re in the middle of Advent. Enjoy.

HERE’S THE SONG!
Here’s the chord chart.

Here’s the skinny on the original song.

“Oh look, yet another Christmas TV special! How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by cola, fast food, and beer… Who’d have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment, and spirituality would mix so harmoniously?”

Calvin & Hobbes

After seriously OD’ing on turkey and pie several times in the past week, I rediscovered The Afternoon Nap.  It certainly is a thing of beauty.  I also discovered that in can by enjoyed nearly anywhere…in the passenger’s seat on the way home from Grandmas, on the floor in front of the Colts game at the other Grandmas, in a borrowed bed far from home.  I’ve heard that if your coat’s big enough even a park bench will do.

But that’s not why I called you here.  I’m here to mention that we’ll be leading worship twice in the next couple of days.  Here are the details:

Dec 31: Cadence Group New Year’s Eve Party, Otterbein Church, 912 S. Potomac St, Waynesboro, PA.  7pm. otterbeinchurch.org

Jan 1: CrossLink, Market Street UM Church, 131 S. Cameron St, Winchester, VA. 7:55pm. crosslinkva.org.
