Life Raft Fundraiser with Video!

The past Saturday, we got the privilege to play with fellow local artists Forever is Forever and Joe Bloom at a fundraising event for Life Raft International at a skating rink. There was a big American flag and everything! One of our new friends decided to capitalize on the opportunity and took some video of playing a couple of our songs. She shared it with us, so we decided to share it with you. Thanks, Angel!

Last summer when we played an event at Independent Bible Church we got more than we apparently bargained for. Systematically through the week the stage crew kept going overboard on the fog machine…not to say we don’t like fog machines, but when you can barely breath and the fire alarms go off, thats when you know there is too much something in the air. In this video (that you all should watch regardless of age, race, gender, eye color or even whatever shampoo you use in the morning) You will see Caleb leading the whole crowd in a call to worship. Setting the stage for a worshipful experience like no other, Caleb starts giving the kids something deep to think about while we play the next song, ignorant to the fact of what was to come next….just watch…

Tangerine CD Release Partay!

Today, nearly six months to the day after we moved Ethan’s drums into a small art studio to begin recording our new album, we have sent off the final mastered tracks to begin the manufacturing process of Tangerine! It has been a long, difficult, challenging, and rewarding experience in many ways. There were times when we thought it would be done in two weeks. There were times when we thought it would never be done. There were times when the only thing we could be sure of was that God is in control. Now it’s DONE, and we couldn’t be more excited!

In celebration, here are a few of our favorite Facebook updates from the first day of recording until now.

August 9, 2010 at 10:49 PM – We’ve moved into an art studio and prepped the drums. Tomorrow, we shall commence recording our new album! Caleb is in New York.

August 19, 2010 at 6:47 PM – Tonight’s slogan: Phat bottom bassists make the rockin world go round.

August 23, 2010 at 1:31 AM – We are so sorry for our lack of information regarding the recording of our new album. To make up for it, here is the whole thing in a nutshell… Ethan got home from St. Louis, Caleb left for New York, Ethan recorded drum tracks, Caleb came back from New York, Caleb left for Indiana, Nate recorded bass tracks, Caleb is still in Indiana, Nate leaves for the beach, Ethan and Seth go off-roading in a Jeep Wrangler.

August 23, 2010 at 9:42 PM – UPDATE! Caleb is still gone BUT very near, Nate is still gone but not to fear, Seth and I were hard at work, but non-grounded studio is being a jerk. In other words, Seth’s guitar sounds like this BUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…Please pray for us.

August 24, 2010 at 1:29 PM – ‎(The following status is to be read in a Jeremy Clarkson style voice.) TONIGHT, Ethan and Caleb will trek to Waynesboro PA for their gig, in a semi broken down purple Dodge Caravan. Seth will try to make it on time before the gig starts. All the while, Nate is still at the beach…taunting some some vollyball players.

September 8, 2010 at 12:32 AM – We just fit the entire studio into the back of Caleb’s van. There’s still enough room for him to safely ferry his children to school in the morning. This is but one of many unbelievable accomplishments of this recording process. Goodbye, studio. You have been, and always shall be our friend.

September 15, 2010 at 12:14 PM – Who has a piano that we could “borrow/use” for a few hours? The new album requires the real thing, not just some electrically excited blinky-screened poser. We have portable recording gear, so all we’d need to do is show up, set up, and play for a few hours. Also, you’d have to be quiet. And in thanks, we’ll autograph your necktie. Message Caleb if you’re interested in being so helpful.

September 25, 2010 at 8:16AM – Yesterday- guitar tracks. Today – the WORLD! I mean piano tracks! Today – live piano tracks!

September 28, 2010 at 7:41pm – We’ve decided to nix tracking bass guitar tonight. Instead, we have opted for eating Chinese food in front of the dog.

September 28, 2010 at 8:49pm – Ooooo. Nevermind that last lapse in judgement. Revived by the aforementioned vittles, bass recording has resumed. Nate is now investigating the fabled “brown note.”

September 29, 2010 at 8:07am – If musical tones were like pieces of cloth, Nate’s bass tone is like a blanket of soft velvet that encompasses and comforts you right before the radio’s burlap sacks pummel you with a ton of bricks.

September 30, 2010 at 5:22pm – You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
…and so we join our feeble voices…tonight we track vocals…

October 4, 2010 at 11:50pm – After singing through a U-87, and ultimately settling on an AKG414 for a vocal mic (pending review of the CV-12 coming tomorrow), Caleb went home. The rest of us voted unanimously to replace all of his vocal takes with our imitations of Kermit the Frog, Elmo, spoken word, screamo, and Johnny Cash, then proceeded to do so. Gold has been born.

October 9, 2010 at 10:37am – Good afternoon, people. Due to a flash Lame Alert issued for our gig this afternoon, we will commence to recording vocals and street drumming tracks for the nearly completed EP.

October 19, 2010 at 8:46pm – Caleb’s phlegm is seeming to act like the perfect luge for his vocal melodies. CHEEKS UP EVERYBODY!!!

November 2, 2010 at 12:18pm – We are beginning to feel somewhat like the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

November 20, 2010 at 1:21pm – Mixing down this album – one song at a time. Also, stopping momentarily to update the Facebook Diaries.

November 24, 2010 at 8:33am – The countdown for the new CD is on. WE’RE TALKING LESS THAN TWO WEEKS, BOYS AND GIRLS! Who wants one or three or ten? (We do.)

December 29, 2010 at 11:33pm – Seriously, people, we are REALLY close to finishing this album. If you’re feeling gypped, then at least know that our progress was only impeded by Jesus’ birthday party. All of you who have pre-ordered the album, or special ordered t-shirts, you will receive them as soon as the album is complete. We haven’t forgotten! The only thing we ask for is prayer.

January 5, 2011 at 11:17pm – Tomorrow, we’ll be mixing more of the album. Just one day closer to the penultimate release! It’s coming. Wait for it…

January 12, 2011 at 6:16pm – Don’t tell anyone, but there is a very real possibility that we could have these songs finished this week.

January 16, 2011 at 2:01pm – In the spirit of keeping you informed, Stereoreel has proofed the final mixes of all the songs on the new album. Oh how musically yummy! They get mastered this week.

January 20, 2011 at 11:02pm – While our ukulele skills increase, the time you have to wait for our album decreases. You can almost set your watch by it. Almost.

February 5, 2011 at 11:25am – Lesson learned: Don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched or they may turn out to be ducks. But…just because ducks have a longer incubation doesn’t mean they’re all ugly.

The Precisely Reborn: Your Passion in Demand

Two years ago, Stereoreel made an attempt at creating a monthly newsletter that would bend the preconceptions of what a monthly update actually is. Instead of emailing a long list of everything that we had done and were planning to do, we thought it best to put such information in a magazine format surrounded by relevant articles on the sort of things that we’re interested in, fun visuals, and bright colors. Then, we posted a link on our website, and emailed a PDF to everyone on our mailing list for their delight and edification. It was an exercise in creativity, informative reading, pop culture, existentialism, and just plain fun. This publication was dubbed The Precisely.

I, Seth Dean, Knight of the Precisely, am here to tell you that The Precisely is being reborn, and we need your help! Not only will this publication feature the personal writings of Stereoreel with information on shows past and future, but it will also feature YOU. I am asking anyone out there, with a desire to let their creativity be known, to submit their work each month to us for possible publication in new issues of The Precisely. We are accepting:

Original photographs you find beautiful, creative, inspiring, unique, or just good.
Photos of Stereoreel
Your personal opinion or reviews on art, music, movies, books, concerts, fashion, websites, restaurants, etc…
Original poetry
Original short stories or serials
Original artwork

New Dates for Living Room Concerts!

Because our own vacations were interfering with booking Sunday evening Living Room Concerts, we have opened up BRAND NEW days to play for you! From now till the end of August, all Tuesdays after 5 PM and Saturdays after 2 PM are free for you to book us. We’re free to play living rooms concerts, deck concerts, cookouts, and even pool parties! Tell all your friends! We’re offering to play at YOUR house for free at our Summer Living Room Concert Events! After this happy July 4th weekend, you can book Stereoreel to come play at your house on any Sunday evening from July 11th-August 29th. We’ll bring our instruments, but we won’t be bringing any sound system to blow your roof off. Just an ear pleasing night of worship between us, you, and your family and friends. Throw a house party! Have a cookout! Hold a night of prayer! It’s up to you! Invite everyone you know because it’s going to be a lot of fun, and we’re looking forward to getting to know you and your crew. Shoot us an email and reserve a Sunday night for your very own Stereoreel Living Room Concert! stereoreel at gmail dot com

There are a few conditions that we shall stipulate forthwith:

Bookings are on a first come, first serve basis. We can only play one Living Room Concert an evening, so jump on the offer fast.
You must get at least 20 people to attend in order for us to play. We’ll play for as many people as can fit in your house, but there needs to be a minimum of 20 guests in the first place. So, go bug your friend with the biggest house.
All Living Room Concerts will be performed on Sundays after 5:00 PM. No other nights are good for us.
The location must be within an hour and a half drive of Winchester, VA for us to come play. Remember, we’re doing this for free. If you desperately want us to play for you and your friends, but you live 2 or more hours away, and you’re willing to pay, then get in contact with us, and we’ll see…
We reserve the right to add more stipulations as the band members get back from Creationfest and double-check my posting, but the aforementioned conditions are pretty much the gist of things.

Hello and Goodbye

Dear Friends and Fans,

We are writing this long overdue blog today to inform you of some major changes that have occurred within Stereoreel over the last few months. Our good friend, Dustin Martin, has decided to relinquish his role as drummer in the band in order to better provide for and focus on his family (but not with Dr. James Dobson). Dustin was the first to begin playing with Caleb, and he has been integral in helping to conceptually and musically develop Stereoreel over the past several years from a drum and keys duo to the 4 man band that exists now.

He has devoted untold hours to the creation of our initial website; designed and built entire drum sets, helped reinvent the piano case, and crafted together finely made monitor stands. He has labored intensively on working out song structures, recorded drum tracks for fun and recreation, and found time to discuss the merits of fine Sy-Fy shows like Stargate SG-1, while maintaining a serious desire to lead people in worship. A solid drummer and a great friend, a lover of Steelers football and Chipotle burritos, his decision to bow out comes with absolutely no strife or enmity between us, and we wish him the very best for him and his wife as they continue to follow God’s leading in their lives. And if they ever invite you over for a chicken dinner, do not hesitate to answer yes. If you have any words of encouragement for Dustin, please post them below.

Along with that change comes a few other swaps in the Stereoreel band lineup. Ethan has now discarded his Fender Jazz Bass and taken over drumming duties. Drums are his first love and passion, and he has been working diligently on utilizing some new gadgets behind the kick drum to go along with his finely honed skillz.

For many months after that move, there was a remaining vacuum of low end in the band that had been occasionally filled by friends as we needed, but never fully plugged. We’re excited to inform you of our new friend and bassist, NathanVencil. Nate is a solid bassist with a background steeped in the rumbly instrument, and he graciously agreed to play with us throughout our upcoming Teen Week gig. So far, we’ve had a blast getting to know him while playing as a group. We already appreciate his uncanny ability to pick out every single disgusting truffle in the chocolate box. All of us are looking forward to the impending barrage of Teen Week performances at Independent Bible Church in Martinsburg, WV.

The Teen Week Kickoff starts this Sunday morning at 10:45 AM, June 13th at IBC. Then, from Monday, June 14th – Friday, June 18th, Teen Week will be starting at 7:00 PM. Stereoreel will play a new worship set every night during the week, culminating in one BIG concert on Friday night. We hope to see you and all of your teenagers there! IT’S FREE! And we have new t-shirts. Those are not free. Bring money and cameras.

In regards to 52 Weeks, we have taken a hiatus since Easter in order to learn the new songs we wrote, and to work them up for live concerts. Why? Because it would be really stupid to write 52 songs that people liked, but never play them live for anyone to hear. So, in the spirit of the advice given by the great Dr. Leo Marvin, “Baby steps write 52 songs. Baby steps write 52 songs.” We hope to reengage 52 weeks as soon as we untie our emotional and musical knots, but before we explode.
